Shipping container grades and condition explained

Container condition labels describe broad categories, not identical products. Two used units with the same grade can look different, which is why exact photos and written notes matter.

Key takeawayTreat the grade as a starting point and the exact unit record as the buying decision.
01

One-trip

A one-trip container has normally carried cargo once from its factory of origin. It is generally the cleanest common retail condition, although minor handling marks are normal.

  • Newer paint and seals
  • Limited cargo history
  • Typically best cosmetic condition
  • Good base for visible modifications
02

Cargo-worthy

Cargo-worthy is a shipping-oriented condition term. A qualified inspection may be required before international cargo use. It does not mean cosmetically perfect, and certification status should never be assumed from an online label alone.

03

Wind and watertight

Wind-and-watertight units are commonly sold for stationary storage and are intended to keep ordinary weather from entering. They can have substantial cosmetic wear and may not be certified for ocean cargo service.

04

As-is and modified units

As-is units may require repairs and should be evaluated for a specific project and budget. Modified units should be reviewed for cut openings, reinforcement, electrical work, insulation, drainage and documentation.

  • Ask how the doors operate
  • Confirm floor and roof condition
  • Get repairs or exclusions in writing
Common questions

Helpful answers before you decide

Does a condition grade guarantee appearance?+

No. Grades cover broad functional expectations. Dents, markings, paint wear and repairs vary, so exact-unit photos are important.

Can a wind-and-watertight unit be shipped internationally?+

Do not assume so. International shipment can require a valid CSC plate and a current inspection by an appropriately qualified party.
