Why companies use fuel surcharges
Diesel prices can rise or fall quickly, while a delivery company's base rates are built to remain stable for customers. A fuel surcharge separates that unpredictable cost from the underlying price of the truck, trailer, driver and service.
- Fuel changes immediately. A long container-delivery route can consume a significant amount of diesel before the truck returns to base.
- Base rates cover the service. Equipment, commercial insurance, maintenance, drivers, loading, permits and safe placement still exist whether diesel rises or falls.
- A benchmark keeps it transparent. Using a published index avoids guessing and reduces the need to rewrite the entire delivery rate every time the pump price moves.
- The adjustment moves with the market. Derkson applies the active percentage to mileage-based transport, so customers can see the base delivery charge and fuel adjustment separately.
